Karachi experienced its sixth earthquakes within 24 hours, triggering panic among residents as multiple tremors rattled the city’s eastern districts. The latest 2.2 magnitude quake struck at 12:17 pm with its epicenter southeast of Malir, reaching 29 kilometers in depth, according to seismic monitoring centers. This follows five previous tremors that began yesterday evening, creating a wave of anxiety across affected neighborhoods including Shah Latif Colony, Bhains Colony, Qaidabad, and Landhi.
As buildings swayed during the midday tremor, terrified residents flooded into streets reciting Quranic verses and chanting “Allahu Akbar.” Many chose to remain outdoors even after the shaking subsided, with some areas reporting families spending the night under open skies. The earthquakes sequence began yesterday at 5 pm, followed by subsequent shocks at 1:15 am, 2 am, 10:29 am, and 11:04 am today. Mosques in several localities broadcast special prayers through the night as the repeated seismic activity kept the city on edge.
While no major structural damage has been reported, the unusual frequency of tremors has raised concerns among geologists. The provincial disaster management authority has activated emergency protocols, urging citizens to avoid unstable structures and prepare emergency kits. Social media platforms are flooded with earthquake survival tips as Karachiites, unaccustomed to such persistent seismic activity, share real-time updates and safety measures. Meteorological officials are closely monitoring the situation, though they maintain these are likely minor tectonic adjustments rather than precursors to a major seismic event.
