Pakistan is facing a serious energy challenge as LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) supply has reportedly dropped to zero, raising concerns about electricity shortages in the coming weeks. According to sources, the situation may lead to 2 to 3 hours of daily load shedding starting from April, especially if gas supply to power plants is reduced further. This development has created uncertainty for both households and industries that rely heavily on stable electricity.

To manage the crisis, authorities are considering diverting gas from other sectors to the power sector. One of the proposals includes completely shutting down gas supply to the CNG sector and reducing supply to fertilizer plants so that more gas can be allocated to electricity generation. This step highlights how critical the situation has become, as the government tries to balance limited resources across essential sectors.

Reports suggest that the power sector previously used around 10 to 15 percent of the country’s LNG supply, and with the current shortage, maintaining electricity production has become more difficult. Officials are now exploring alternative solutions, but options are limited and often expensive.

One such alternative is generating electricity using diesel, but this comes at a very high cost. According to power division sources, electricity generated from diesel could exceed Rs. 80 per unit, making it too expensive for regular use. Due to these high costs, authorities are likely to avoid relying on diesel-based power generation, which further limits their options.

This situation could directly impact daily life, causing inconvenience for citizens and disruptions for businesses. The coming weeks will be crucial as the government works to manage the energy crisis and prevent a larger breakdown in power supply
