Pakistan’s federal government has approved the draft Defence Forces Act 2026, a proposed legal framework aimed at bringing greater administrative coordination to the country’s military command structure.
The legislation would formally establish the office and headquarters of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and set clearer rules for administrative responsibilities, command structures and official procedures.
The proposed changes also seek to update existing strategic defence laws, including the National Command Authority Act, so that different branches of the armed forces operate under a more unified and modern legal framework.

The move follows recent constitutional changes and is being presented as an effort to streamline the country’s defence administration.
With the Federal Cabinet giving the draft its approval, the proposed legislation is expected to move to Parliament for consideration and approval before becoming law.
If enacted, the framework could represent a significant change in how Pakistan’s senior military command and administrative structures are legally organized.
