The study, which analyzed thousands of families in the U.S. and Denmark, found that second-born boys are 20-40% more likely to have disciplinary issues at school or even run ins with the law compared to their older siblings.
Why the difference? Experts speculate that first-borns benefit from undivided parental attention and mature role models, while second-borns often mimic their slightly older siblings—who are still kids themselves. This “peer-like” influence, combined with less one-on-one time with parents, might contribute to more rebellious behavior.
But don’t blame birth order alone! Researchers emphasize that parenting style, family environment, and individual personality still play the biggest roles in shaping behavior. So while the data shows a trend, it’s not destiny—many second-borns thrive without any extra mischief.
