Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have signed a historic Strategic Mutual Defence Pact, marking a new chapter in their decades-long relationship. The agreement, finalized at Yamama Palace in Riyadh on Wednesday, was jointly announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Under the pact, any attack on either country will be considered an attack on both, formalizing the close military and strategic ties between the two nations into a powerful security shield.
Strengthening Defence and Security
The defence pact includes:
- Joint military exercises
- Collaboration in advanced defence technologies
- Intelligence sharing
Officials explained that these steps will significantly boost deterrence against external threats and send a strong message to potential adversaries.
Historic Partnership
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, this agreement is rooted in nearly eight decades of partnership based on Islamic values, shared interests, and close defence cooperation. Analysts view it as a turning point in regional security, elevating the Pakistan–Saudi Arabia alliance to one of the strongest in the Muslim world.
Leadership Engagement
During the visit, both leaders discussed bilateral relations, regional challenges, and global issues. Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed gratitude to the Saudi leadership for their warm hospitality and conveyed good wishes to King Salman and the people of Saudi Arabia. Crown Prince Mohammed assured Pakistan of continued support and friendship.
Symbolic Gestures of Brotherhood
The visit was marked with ceremonial honor and symbolism. When the Prime Minister’s plane entered Saudi airspace, Saudi Air Force jets escorted it, reflecting the depth of brotherly ties. On arrival, he was also presented with a guard of honour.
Expanding Cooperation
The Prime Minister was accompanied by senior ministers including Ishaq Dar, Khawaja Asif, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Musadik Malik, and Tariq Fatemi. Beyond defence, both countries also pledged to expand cooperation in trade, energy, and other sectors, further solidifying bilateral ties.

Experts believe this pact could reshape regional power dynamics, positioning Pakistan and Saudi Arabia as a united front against emerging threats while deepening their influence across the Muslim world.
