Doctor Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, a renowned Pakistani physician, has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to global health. The announcement was made in a statement by a private hospital.
The Order of Canada, established in 1967 during the country’s centennial celebrations, is awarded to individuals who make “extraordinary contributions to the nation.” Since its inception, over 7,600 individuals from various fields have received this prestigious honour.
This year, 88 individuals from diverse sectors, including healthcare and the arts, were recognized as part of the Order of Canada. Among them, 24 were inducted as Officers, including Dr. Bhutta.
Dr. Bhutta’s groundbreaking work in maternal, newborn, and child health has had a transformative impact, improving the lives of millions, particularly in underserved and marginalized communities. His contributions have shaped public health policies at institutions like the World Health Organization (WHO) and influenced programs in vulnerable regions around the world.
Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Bhutta said, “I am deeply honoured by this recognition and immensely grateful to the generations of students and colleagues who have collaborated with me over the years to address the challenges faced by women and children in Pakistan and other low-income countries.”
