The BBC unveiled its prestigious 100 Women for 2024 list on Tuesday, and two inspiring figures from Pakistan have earned their place: singer-songwriter Hadiqa Kiani and activist-doctor Mahrang Baloch.
These trailblazing women join an exceptional global roster of influential personalities, including astronaut Sunita Williams, rape survivor Gisèle Pelicot, and Nobel laureate Nadia Murad. Their inclusion highlights their significant contributions to society and humanity.
Hadiqa Kiani
Rising to fame in the 1990s, Hadiqa Kiani became a celebrated figure in South Asian pop music with her versatile voice and captivating performances. However, her influence extends far beyond music. Kiani is deeply committed to humanitarian causes, serving as a United Nations Development Programme goodwill ambassador. In response to the devastating 2022 floods in Pakistan, she launched Vaseela-e-Raah, a project focused on providing assistance to flood victims in Balochistan and South Punjab. Through the initiative, Kiani has helped displaced families, building 370 homes and facilities for those in need.
Mahrang Baloch
A fierce advocate for human rights, Mahrang Baloch has become a prominent voice in the fight against enforced disappearances in Balochistan. In late 2023, she led a 1,600-km march to Islamabad, demanding accountability for missing loved ones, a journey that saw her arrested twice. As a leading figure with the Baloch Yakjehti (Unity) Committee, her activism has earned her a spot on TIME’s 100 Next 2024 list of emerging leaders. Despite facing significant opposition from the government, which has condemned her actions, Baloch remains steadfast in her pursuit of justice and equality.
