Pakistan’s National Assembly has taken a major step toward digital transformation by becoming the country’s first AI-enabled legislative body following the official launch of the AI Parliament module and an AI-enabled Speaker’s Office at Parliament House.
The initiative was formally inaugurated by Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq during a soft launch ceremony. The project has been developed by the National Information Technology Board (NITB) with the goal of modernizing parliamentary operations through artificial intelligence, paperless workflows, and secure digital systems.
Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja addressed the ceremony, highlighting that the government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif initiated a nationwide digitalization drive aimed at transforming public institutions into efficient, paperless systems.
According to the minister, the National Assembly has already implemented an e-Office system and is now advancing further by integrating AI-based tools to support legislative functions. She noted that the parliament has also made progress in adopting green energy solutions and establishing an SDG Secretariat, making it one of the more digitally progressive institutions in the country.
National Assembly Passes Key Amendments on Military Tenure and Judiciary Expansion
Officials explained that the parliamentary system previously relied heavily on printed documentation, especially during budget sessions where large volumes of paper were distributed among lawmakers. The new AI-based system aims to reduce paper waste, improve accessibility of information, and enhance transparency in legislative processes.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq acknowledged that while some lawmakers may initially face challenges adapting to digital tools, the long-term benefits include improved efficiency and streamlined governance. He also shared that efforts are underway to make future budget sessions fully paperless, with digital access provided via secure devices instead of printed materials.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward digital governance and is expected to expand further across parliamentary functions in the coming years.
