Following the announcement of the Spring (Basant) Festival in Lahore, the kite-flying business in Peshawar has witnessed a significant surge. According to local shopkeepers, kite-flying goods worth Rs30–44 billion have already been sold in Peshawar’s kite markets.
While the festival is being celebrated in Lahore, its economic impact is clearly being felt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Peshawar. Traders say the announcement triggered an extraordinary rise in demand, pushing business activity to new heights.
There are more than 80 kite shops in Peshawar’s Yakatoot and Mundaberi areas, where kites of various sizes, colors, and designs are manufactured. Shopkeepers report a sharp increase in orders after Basant was officially approved.

Merchants noted that rising raw material and labor costs have driven prices higher, while sudden demand has caused shortages. A bundle that once cost Rs8,000 is now selling for Rs35,000 to Rs40,000, and customers are even requesting premium kites priced between Rs10,000 and Rs20,000.
Buyers from Lahore and other cities are flocking to Peshawar due to better quality, wider variety, and availability of both simple and designer kites. Many traders said kite-flying materials are currently scarce in Lahore, making Peshawar the primary supply hub.
Local merchants added that most of the kites produced in Peshawar are being shipped to Punjab, providing a major boost to the local economy. Overall, the Peshawar kite market is experiencing unprecedented business activity due to Basant celebrations in Lahore.
