Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the establishment of six biogas plants as part of the provincial government’s efforts to expand clean and renewable energy sources. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting focused on sustainable energy solutions and environmental protection.
During the meeting, the launch of a Waste-to-Energy project in Lahore was also finalized. The project aims to convert urban waste into electricity, helping reduce pollution while producing low-cost power for public transportation. According to officials, the electricity generated will be used to operate electric buses and metro bus services in the city.

Under the Model Village Program, three pilot biogas projects will be introduced in rural areas. These projects are designed to support rural development by providing an affordable and reliable source of gas for household use. In addition to gas production, the biogas plants will also produce bio-fertilizer, which can be used to improve agricultural productivity.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stated that Punjab is taking a leading role in promoting clean energy initiatives. She emphasized that renewable energy projects are essential for reducing dependence on expensive fuel imports, protecting the environment, and ensuring long-term energy security.
Officials said the biogas plants will help manage agricultural and organic waste more efficiently, reducing methane emissions and improving sanitation in rural communities. The projects are also expected to create employment opportunities and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
