Lahore has started preparations for the upcoming regulated Basant festival, with authorities opening online registration for kite manufacturers well ahead of the event.
Under the new system, manufacturers must register through a dedicated online portal and obtain official clearance before beginning production. The move is aimed at bringing kite manufacturing under closer supervision and ensuring that only products meeting approved safety standards reach the market.
Authorities have also introduced strict requirements regarding the materials used for kites and strings. Only approved kite sizes and cotton string will be permitted, while hazardous materials such as chemical-coated string and metallic wire will face zero tolerance.
Manufacturing facilities are expected to undergo inspections so authorities can monitor production directly and ensure that registered manufacturers are following the prescribed rules. This early registration process is intended to give officials greater control over the supply chain before kites are made available to the public.

Registration for sellers and traders is expected to begin later in the year, completing another stage of the regulatory framework.
