A major administrative development has taken place regarding the restructuring of Lahore, as Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given in-principle approval to divide Lahore into two separate districts. The decision aims to reduce administrative pressure, improve governance, and ensure faster delivery of public services in the provincial capital.
According to officials, it was decided in a high-level meeting that administrative restructuring of Lahore will begin immediately after Basant. The move comes in response to Lahore’s rapidly growing population and increasing governance challenges, which have placed immense pressure on existing administrative and municipal systems.
Under the proposed plan, Lahore will be divided into two administrative districts, each with its own Deputy Commissioner, police command structure, and municipal system. The new setup is expected to significantly enhance service delivery, improve coordination among departments, and bring government services closer to the public.

The Punjab government has also decided to redefine Lahore’s administrative boundaries to ensure better provision of civic facilities. Officials believe that issues such as traffic congestion, encroachments, sanitation, and municipal inefficiencies can only be addressed through a modern administrative division. The restructuring is being described as an unavoidable step to manage Lahore’s scale and complexity.
Government sources stated that Lahore’s massive population makes it difficult to respond swiftly to public complaints. Dividing the city into two districts will help ensure quicker resolution of citizen grievances, improve law enforcement response, and strengthen municipal oversight.
On the chief minister’s instructions, relevant departments have been directed to complete all preparatory work immediately. Maryam Nawaz has asked officials to finalize the process without delay so that Lahore can be formally divided into two districts on administrative grounds.
Due to the importance of the matter and several key follow-up actions, another review meeting has been scheduled for February 9. Authorities have termed the division of Lahore a major step toward urban governance reforms in Punjab.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said that dividing Lahore into two districts has become inevitable for public convenience and improved governance. She emphasized that the move is not political but purely administrative in nature.
She further stated that the creation of two districts would result in faster, more effective, and people-centric service delivery, adding that long-standing issues related to traffic management, encroachments, and municipal services require structural solutions.
“The government’s top priority is to provide immediate relief to the citizens of Lahore,” the chief minister said. “Every decision we take is centered on public ease, transparency, and efficient governance.”
Maryam Nawaz also highlighted that the complaint redressal system would become far more effective once Lahore is divided, enabling authorities to respond promptly to public concerns. She reiterated that the government is introducing modern and efficient governance models for major cities across Punjab, with Lahore’s restructuring serving as a key starting point.
