Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has indicated that the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former prime minister Imran Khan may be shifted to the new Islamabad Model Jail once the facility becomes operational.
The minister made these remarks during a visit to the under-construction Islamabad Model Jail and the newly built trainee officers’ hostel at the National Police Academy. During the visit, he reviewed progress on major security and training infrastructure projects in the federal capital.
Officials briefed the interior minister that the jail project, which had remained pending for nearly 15 years since its launch in 2011, has now reached more than 85 percent completion in its first phase. Authorities expect the facility to become functional within the next two months. The modern jail will feature dual security walls, a digital surveillance and monitoring system, and a centralized control room aimed at enhancing overall security and operational efficiency.

During the inspection, Mohsin Naqvi visited various barracks and expressed satisfaction with both the pace and quality of construction work. He emphasized that establishing a modern model jail in Islamabad is crucial for strengthening the capital’s security framework. He directed relevant authorities to speed up the remaining construction by operating in double shifts to ensure timely completion.
The minister also inspected the model room of a hostel being constructed for under-training Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) at the National Police Academy. He instructed officials to maintain high standards of accommodation for trainee officers, stating that improved infrastructure would significantly enhance the quality of police training nationwide.
Senior officials, including Inspector General Ali Nasir Rizvi, Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa, and FIA Director General Dr. Usman Anwar, were also present during the visit.
Responding to a media query regarding whether Imran Khan would be transferred to the new facility, Naqvi stated that any prisoner sentenced by a court in Islamabad would be lodged in a prison within the federal capital. His remarks suggested that the former prime minister could be moved to the Islamabad Model Jail once it becomes operational, provided legal requirements are met.
Naqvi further highlighted that modern model jails are being developed to provide inmates with essential facilities under one roof, including healthcare, medical treatment, and specialized services such as eye care.
His comments come amid recent reports claiming that Imran Khan has experienced significant vision loss—reportedly around 85 percent—in his right eye, raising concerns about his medical condition and the facilities available for his treatment.
