Sohail Adnan of Pakistan has etched his name in history by winning the U-13 title at the 2025 British Junior Open Squash Championship, ending an 18-year drought for the nation since Nasir Iqbal’s triumph in 2007.
In a thrilling final, Adnan defeated Egypt’s top seed Moiz Tamir Al-Mughazi 3-2 with scores of 11-5, 5-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5. This victory revived memories of Pakistan’s golden era in squash. The win also marked a hat-trick of titles for Adnan, who had claimed the US and Scottish Junior Opens in December 2024, as noted on the British Junior Open’s website.
Adnan’s journey to the title was marked by outstanding performances. He secured his spot in the top eight by defeating Malaysia’s Wain Isaac Wilson in the pre-quarterfinals with a commanding 11-4, 11-7, 11-5 win. He then triumphed over Germany’s Mats Oliver Efken and Scotland’s Calum Smith 3-0, showcasing his exceptional skills against strong competition.
In June 2024, Adnan and seven other Pakistani players reached the semi-finals of the 31st Junior Individual Squash Championship in Islamabad. In the U-13 quarter-finals of that event, Adnan defeated Singapore’s 13th seed Jackrish Kumar with an emphatic 11-0, 11-7, 11-3 victory.
The victory drew praise from national leaders and sports officials. President Asif Ali Zardari congratulated Adnan for his exceptional achievement, lauding him for bringing glory to Pakistan after nearly two decades. “Sohail Adnan has made the nation proud, and I pray for his continued success,” Zardari said.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi also extended heartfelt congratulations, commending the 12-year-old’s determination and skill. “Sohail Adnan has elevated the green flag on an international stage with this historic win,” Naqvi remarked. “His remarkable performance and hard work deserve immense appreciation.”
This victory not only cements Adnan’s status as a rising star in squash but also signals a resurgence of Pakistan’s rich legacy in the sport.
