Punjab Launches EcoWatch App to Curb Industrial Pollution and Combat Smog

In a landmark move to tackle environmental pollution, the Punjab government has launched the EcoWatch app, a digital platform aimed at real-time monitoring of industries and brick kilns across the province. This initiative, the first of its kind in Pakistan, introduces unique identification codes for all industrial units and brick kilns, ensuring a structured and transparent inspection system.

A Step Towards Reducing Air Pollution and Smog

The EcoWatch app plays a crucial role in Punjab’s anti-smog efforts, particularly during the winter season when industrial emissions and brick kiln smoke significantly contribute to worsening air quality. By integrating e-mapping and digital inspections, environmental authorities can now track, analyze, and regulate pollution levels more efficiently.

  • Strict Monitoring of Emissions: Industries and brick kilns are among the major contributors to toxic emissions, smog, and deteriorating air quality in Punjab, especially in cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala. With the EcoWatch system, inspectors can instantly record and report violations, ensuring that units failing to adopt environmentally friendly technologies—such as zigzag kiln technology—are penalized.
  • Real-Time Data for Smog Control Measures: The app enables authorities to identify pollution hotspots and take timely action, such as closing non-compliant units or imposing fines on industries flouting environmental laws.
  • Instant Accessibility to Violation Records: The system makes violation records readily available, preventing repeated offenses and allowing for stricter enforcement of anti-smog policies.

Strict Enforcement Under PEEDA Act

Officials have warned that employees or industrial owners violating environmental standards will face strict action under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline, and Accountability (PEEDA) Act. Non-compliant industries could face fines, closures, and legal repercussions, making it imperative for businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices.

A Sustainable Future for Punjab

The EcoWatch initiative represents a significant step in Punjab’s fight against rising air pollution and climate change challenges. By ensuring better regulatory enforcement, the app aims to reduce industrial emissions, improve air quality, and ultimately contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
