Pakistan’s first 2D hand-painted animated feature, The Glassworker, has made history by being nominated for the 2025 Oscars in the International Feature Film category. Directed and written by Usman Riaz and produced by Manu Animation Studios in collaboration with Mandviwala Entertainment, this film marks a significant milestone for the country’s representation at the prestigious awards.
With a staggering 14,777 cuts and 2,500 individual paintings crafted by a talented team of young artists, each frame of The Glassworker is a testament to meticulous artistry. The film was released in theaters on July 26.
Director Usman Riaz expressed his gratitude on Instagram, stating, “The Glassworker represents a decade of passion and perseverance.” He hopes the film resonates with audiences worldwide, showcasing Pakistan’s rich talent and creativity.
The narrative revolves around Vincent and his father Tomas, who run a glass workshop. Their lives are disrupted when war erupts, forcing them to confront their reluctance to engage in the conflict. Meanwhile, Alliz, the daughter of an army colonel, enters their town, leading to a complicated romance between her and Vincent, challenged by their fathers’ opposing views.
Set in a time where patriotism often overshadows artistic expression, The Glassworker tackles themes of love, war, society, and the struggle for free thought.
Riaz shared his journey, stating, “I started this journey 10 years ago in 2014; no one believed it would be possible.” The film brought together a dedicated team of 250 individuals to create this remarkable work of art.
Having premiered at the Shanghai Film Festival and competing at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2024, The Glassworker also screened at the Cannes Film Festival in May, further solidifying its international acclaim.
