Norwegian footballer Ole Saeter, eligible to represent Pakistan due to his mother’s heritage, has rejected a substantial offer from Israeli club Maccabi Haifa on moral grounds.
Saeter, who was offered approximately $910,000 (around PKR 264.3 million), explained that he couldn’t play for a country he believes is responsible for violence against children and the elderly. He firmly stated, “Even if I were offered $500 million, I would not join an Israeli club,” emphasizing that his principles outweigh financial incentives.
He has also shared pictures of himself wearing a Pakistan football team jersey on social media, showcasing his connection to the country.
Meanwhile, FIFA has postponed its decision on the Palestinian Football Association’s request to suspend Israel from international soccer due to the ongoing Gaza conflict. The decision will now be considered in October, following a legal review of the Palestinian claims against the Israel Football Association.
The Palestinian association accuses the Israeli association of violating international law, discriminating against Arab players, and hosting clubs in Palestinian territories, which Israel denies. Additionally, the Palestinian group reports that 92 Palestinian players have died in the conflict, with football facilities destroyed and leagues halted. They are urging FIFA to impose sanctions on Israeli teams, including both the national team and clubs.
