Lahore is set to modernize its traffic system with the introduction of European-style pelican signals at key locations across the city. The Traffic Engineering & Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) has launched a new project to install smart traffic signals and pedestrian pelican crossings at 20 major intersections, following approval from the Punjab Cabinet.
The main goal of this initiative is to reduce traffic congestion, improve pedestrian safety, and ensure smoother traffic flow. Pelican crossings allow pedestrians to safely cross busy roads by pressing a button that temporarily stops traffic, a system widely used in European cities.
The upgraded signals will use real-time vehicle detection technology, along with advanced cameras and sensors, to manage traffic more efficiently. These smart systems can adjust signal timing based on traffic volume, helping to minimize delays during peak hours.

To ensure effective monitoring and enforcement, the new traffic system will be fully integrated with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and the traffic police. This centralized setup will allow authorities to monitor intersections live, respond quickly to issues, and improve overall traffic control across the city.
As part of the project, LED-lit zebra crossings will be installed to enhance visibility, especially at night and in low-light conditions. This feature is expected to significantly reduce pedestrian accidents and improve road safety for all users.
The decision to expand pelican crossings comes after a successful pilot project on Mall Road, where the system showed positive results in controlling traffic and making pedestrian movement safer and more organized.
Officials say this project is a major step toward transforming Lahore into a smarter and safer city, aligned with modern urban planning standards. By adopting proven international traffic solutions, Lahore aims to improve daily commuting experiences and protect pedestrians in one of Pakistan’s busiest cities.
Once completed, the initiative is expected to set an example for other major cities in Pakistan looking to upgrade their traffic management systems.
