The Punjab government has officially canceled the grand opening ceremony of the Basant festival scheduled for February 6, 2026, at the historic Lahore Fort. This decision comes as part of efforts to ensure strict enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during the festival and to prioritize public safety.
According to officials, instead of the full-scale ceremony, authorities are considering a symbolic inauguration where foreign guests and prominent personalities may participate in kite flying within the old city walls under controlled conditions.
Punjab Information Minister, Azma Bukhari, stated that while citizens are permitted to enjoy kite flying, it is the government’s responsibility to ensure safety regulations are followed rigorously. She emphasized that special monitoring camps will be established at Safe City Headquarters and the District Commissioner’s offices to oversee festival activities.
The minister appealed to the public to celebrate Basant responsibly, strictly adhere to SOPs, and prioritize safety to guarantee a secure and enjoyable festival for everyone.
This move reflects the government’s focus on balancing cultural celebration with citizen safety amid the high-risk nature of kite flying in densely populated areas.
