Pakistan is setting an ambitious economic target: becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2035. Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has said the goal is not simply about reaching a large GDP number, but about creating sustainable and productive economic growth that can improve opportunities for people across the country.
According to Iqbal, Pakistan needs to focus on productivity, innovation, investment, exports and employment to achieve meaningful long-term growth. The government’s URAAN Pakistan framework is built around several key areas, including digital transformation, energy, infrastructure, climate resilience, human capital and greater economic equity.
A major part of the vision is strengthening “Made in Pakistan” products through better quality, innovation and competitiveness. Instead of depending heavily on imports, Pakistan needs to build industries that can produce high-value goods and successfully compete in international markets.
Iqbal also highlighted sectors that could shape Pakistan’s future economy, including artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and technology. These industries could create new jobs, increase productivity and help the country move toward higher-value exports.

However, reaching a $1 trillion economy within the next decade will require more than ambitious targets. Policy continuity and strong cooperation between the public and private sectors will be critical. Businesses need predictable policies, while the government needs to create an environment where investment, innovation and entrepreneurship can grow.
Pakistan has a large population, a growing digital economy and significant potential across agriculture, manufacturing, technology and services. Turning that potential into sustained economic growth, however, will require consistent reforms and long-term planning.
The $1 trillion target is certainly ambitious, but the bigger challenge is ensuring that economic expansion translates into better jobs, stronger exports, higher productivity and improved living standards.
