Nepal’s devastating glacier-related disaster has highlighted a frightening challenge facing mountain communities across South Asia. Reports of hundreds of deaths and thousands of people missing have raised urgent questions about whether traditional rescue methods are enough when entire structures are buried or underground passages collapse.

In situations like these, sending rescue teams with ropes, boats and basic equipment may not be sufficient. People trapped inside collapsed hydro tunnels or beneath several feet of mud and debris can be extremely difficult to locate, especially when rescuers cannot safely reach the affected areas.

That is why Nepal has reportedly sought more specialized assistance, including thermal imaging, advanced tunnel-rescue equipment, DNA testing and sub-surface mapping technology. These tools can help authorities locate survivors, identify victims and understand what is happening beneath unstable terrain.

The disaster also carries a serious warning for Pakistan.

Pakistan’s northern regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, are home to some of the world’s most fragile mountain environments. The lesson is clear: disaster preparedness cannot begin after a mountain collapses. Governments need stronger early-warning systems, accurate glacier monitoring, specialized rescue equipment and trained teams capable of operating in tunnels, mountains and unstable terrain.

Technology can make a major difference when conventional rescue methods reach their limits. Drones, satellite imagery, thermal cameras, ground-penetrating systems and advanced communication networks could help emergency responders act faster and more accurately.

For countries sharing similar mountain environments, Nepal’s tragedy should be treated as a warning—not simply another disaster story.
