Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a major initiative to modern waste management across the province. She has directed all relevant authorities to install color-coded dustbins in public and private spaces, including markets, shopping malls, commercial centers, government offices, and educational institutions.
This step is part of the government’s broader strategy to introduce organized waste segregation and improve environmental sustainability. Earlier, under Phase I, the Punjab government approved the implementation of a Smart Waste Management Process in all government and private educational institutions in September of last year. The new directive expands this system to the entire province.

Color-Coded Dustbin System
To ensure proper sorting of waste, each bin color represents a different category of garbage:
Yellow Bins – For Paper & Packaging Waste
All paper materials, cardboard, packaging items, and general dry waste will be disposed of in yellow bins.
Green Bins – For Glass & Laboratory Waste
Used bottles, broken glass, and waste generated from laboratories will be placed in green bins.
Purple (or Grey) Bins – For Organic & Food Waste
Fruit peels, leftover food, leaves, and decayed vegetables will be collected in purple or grey bins, helping in composting and organic recycling.
Red Bins – For Metal Waste
Red bins are designated for iron scraps, metallic materials, and other metal-based waste.
Orange Bins – For Plastic Waste
All types of plastic products and related waste will be thrown into orange bins for proper recycling.
This color-coded waste segregation system marks a significant step toward a cleaner, more sustainable Punjab. By implementing smart waste practices, the government aims to improve environmental hygiene, promote recycling, and modernize the overall waste management infrastructure of the province.
