A new study has revealed that freelancers in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) are earning an impressive $15 million per year, significantly outperforming the region’s IT companies, which collectively generate around $3.5 million annually.
With an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 active freelancers working on global platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr, GB is rapidly emerging as a freelancing powerhouse. This rise comes despite persistent challenges related to internet connectivity, infrastructure limitations, and frequent power outages.

The region’s high literacy rate, coupled with a growing pool of digitally skilled youth, has played a major role in driving this upward trend. Institutions such as PAFLA, SCO, and various development organizations have stepped in to support this growing digital economy by establishing tech parks, launching skill-development programs, and opening coworking spaces to provide a conducive working environment.
Although obstacles remain—particularly the need for stable, high-speed internet—Gilgit-Baltistan’s tech ecosystem is expanding at a remarkable pace. The region shows tremendous potential to become a significant contributor to Pakistan’s digital economy in the years ahead.
