The Karachi South Consumer Protection Court has ruled in favor of a customer in a case involving a refrigerator sold with a “lifetime warranty” that began malfunctioning within months of purchase.
Accepting the complaint filed by a citizen named Arif, the court found a private company guilty of selling a defective appliance and misleading the customer through false warranty claims. The refrigerator was purchased from Clifton after the company assured the buyer that it was covered under a lifetime warranty.
According to the case details, the appliance developed faults shortly after purchase, and despite repeated requests, the company failed to properly repair or replace it. The court ruled that this amounted to a violation of consumer rights.

In its verdict, the court ordered the company to pay Rs200,000 as compensation to the complainant for mental distress and inconvenience. Additionally, the company was directed to pay Rs50,000 in legal costs and replace the faulty refrigerator with a brand-new unit.
The court emphasized that companies must honor their warranty commitments and ensure product quality. It also stressed that misleading claims, especially those related to lifetime warranties, will not be tolerated under consumer protection laws.
Consumer rights advocates have welcomed the decision, calling it an important step toward holding businesses accountable and protecting customers from deceptive practices.
The ruling sends a strong message to manufacturers and retailers that false advertising and failure to provide after-sales support can lead to serious legal consequences.
