Lahore is set to introduce its first dedicated walk-friendly area as the redevelopment of Neela Gumbad enters its final phase, with completion expected by October 9, 2026. According to the Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA), the ambitious urban renewal project is already 76% complete.
Launched in October 2025 at an estimated cost of Rs. 2.45 billion, the project aims to transform one of Lahore’s busiest commercial hubs into a safer, more organized, and pedestrian-friendly destination. TEPA officials confirmed that around 78% of the allocated funds have already been utilized, and construction remains on schedule.
Located near King Edward Medical University, Punjab University, Anarkali Bazaar, Bicycle Market, Tyre Market, and Bank Square, Neela Gumbad has long struggled with heavy traffic congestion, illegal encroachments, limited parking, and vehicle theft. The redevelopment is designed to address these long-standing urban challenges while improving accessibility for shoppers, students, commuters, and tourists.

A major highlight of the project is the construction of a three-level underground facility featuring 374 car parking spaces and 790 motorcycle parking spaces. Additionally, 69 existing shops will be relocated to the first basement to create more open space at street level.
The upgraded site will also include wide pedestrian walkways, a computerized parking management system, CCTV surveillance, modern firefighting equipment, public washrooms, and elevators to ensure convenience and safety for visitors.
Once completed, the Neela Gumbad redevelopment is expected to become a landmark urban project for Lahore, promoting walkability, easing traffic congestion, and setting a new standard for sustainable city planning. It marks a significant step toward creating a more accessible, modern, and people-friendly urban environment.
