The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a glacial flood and landslide alert for Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as a fresh spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue through Monday. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow all official safety instructions.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), heavy rainfall combined with rising temperatures has increased the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the country’s northern mountainous regions. These floods occur when glacial lakes overflow or burst, sending large volumes of water downstream within a short period.
The weather advisory warns that intense rainfall may also trigger flash floods, landslides, and mudslides, particularly in low-lying areas, valleys, and communities located near rivers and streams. Roads in mountainous regions may become blocked due to falling rocks and landslides, potentially disrupting travel and emergency response operations.

The NDMA has advised provincial and local authorities to remain on high alert and ensure that emergency teams, rescue personnel, and disaster response equipment are ready to respond if needed. District administrations have also been instructed to closely monitor weather conditions and issue timely warnings to residents living in high-risk areas.
Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain, stay away from rivers, streams, and flood-prone locations, and immediately report any emergency situations to local authorities. Tourists visiting northern Pakistan have also been advised to monitor weather updates before planning their journeys.
Pakistan experiences frequent monsoon-related flooding during the summer season, while climate change has increased the risk of glacial melting in the northern mountains. Officials stress that early preparedness and public awareness are essential to reducing the impact of natural disasters.
The NDMA and PMD will continue monitoring the evolving weather situation and issue further advisories if conditions worsen in the coming days.
