The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has launched a Rs. 900 million expansion and renovation project at Skardu International Airport to improve passenger facilities and support the rapidly growing tourism industry in Gilgit-Baltistan. The major infrastructure upgrade is expected to increase the airport’s capacity and prepare it for future international flight operations.
According to the PAA, the project includes a significant expansion of the airport’s terminal building, which will grow from 21,000 square feet to 39,000 square feet. The upgraded terminal will provide a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for passengers while meeting the increasing demand for air travel to northern Pakistan.
As part of the development, the departure lounge capacity will increase from 300 to 900 passengers, while the arrival lounge will expand from 80 to 200 passengers. These improvements are designed to reduce congestion during busy travel seasons and enhance passenger convenience.

The airport will also increase its check-in counters from six to ten, helping shorten waiting times and improve operational efficiency. In addition, the parking area will be expanded from 200 to 600 vehicles, providing better access for travelers and visitors.
Another key feature of the project is the construction of a modern cargo office block, which will strengthen cargo handling services and support trade and commercial activities in the region. Improved cargo facilities are expected to benefit local businesses and boost economic development in Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan, construction is currently in its initial phase, with line-marking work already underway before major civil development begins.
The upgraded airport is expected to attract more domestic and international airlines, making Skardu more accessible to tourists from around the world. Officials believe the project will play an important role in promoting tourism, creating new business opportunities, and supporting the long-term economic growth of Gilgit-Baltistan while improving Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure.
