The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched Pakistan’s first-ever dematerialised digital identity card, marking a groundbreaking advancement in the country’s identity management system. This milestone was announced during NADRA’s silver jubilee celebrations, highlighting 25 years of the authority’s contribution to national security and citizen registration.
The event featured several commemorative initiatives, including the unveiling of a special coin by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), a postage stamp issued by Pakistan Post, and a book documenting NADRA’s 25-year journey in modernising identity verification and data management in the country.
A prestigious ceremony was held at NADRA’s headquarters, attended by high-ranking officials, including its founding chairman, Major General (Retd) Zahid Ihsan, and the current NADRA Chairman, Lieutenant General (Retd) Asif Munir. Other key figures included the special secretary of interior, the chief statistician of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the director-general of Immigration and Passports, former NADRA chairpersons, board members, and senior officials.
A Leap Towards Digital Transformation
In a written message, Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Mohsin Naqvi hailed the launch of the dematerialised digital identity card as a major step toward Pakistan’s digital transformation. He explained that once integrated into the Pak ID mobile app, citizens would be able to securely store their identity cards digitally on their smartphones, reducing dependency on physical cards.
This initiative is expected to revolutionize identity verification across various sectors, including banking, government services, and travel, making the process more efficient and reducing the risk of identity fraud.
Furthermore, a digital verification system is in the pipeline, designed to enhance security and provide instant verification for multiple services, including financial transactions, SIM card registrations, and online applications. This initiative is part of the World Bank-supported Digital Economy Project, with a pilot phase set to launch on Independence Day 2025.
Nadra’s Commitment to Accessibility & Security
The minister also underscored Nadra’s efforts to extend identity registration services to remote and underprivileged areas, ensuring that all citizens, including those in rural and inaccessible regions, have access to official identity documents. He also acknowledged the authority’s role in facilitating overseas Pakistanis through digital and remote registration services.
Additionally, Nadra continues to support law enforcement agencies by providing advanced biometric and identity verification tools, contributing to national security efforts and crime prevention.
Celebrating 25 Years of Innovation
As part of the silver jubilee celebrations, a documentary highlighting Nadra’s achievements over the past 25 years was screened, showcasing its transformation into one of the most sophisticated identity management systems in the world. A commemorative book detailing Nadra’s journey was also presented, receiving widespread appreciation from attendees.
Reflecting on the institution’s evolution, Major General (Retd) Zahid Ihsan emphasized Nadra’s continuous growth and technological advancements. He noted that the authority has consistently adapted to global trends in identity management, setting new benchmarks and positioning Pakistan as a leader in digital identity solutions.
The launch of the dematerialised digital identity card marks a significant step in Pakistan’s journey toward a fully digitized future, ensuring convenience, security, and efficiency for its citizens.
