Asif Bashir, the Pakistani hero who risked his life to save Hajj pilgrims in Makkah during the scorching heat of 2024, has shared his extraordinary journey with SAMAA’s Usman Javed Malik. Despite battling extreme exhaustion, Asif carried out daring rescue operations, saving over 17 lives in Hajj 2024.
A resident of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and an employee at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Peshawar, Asif was part of the Hajj mission last year. Recalling the devastating events of 9th Dhu al-Hijjah, he described how over 1,500 pilgrims succumbed to heatstroke.
“During the stoning of the Devil, many pilgrims collapsed due to heat exhaustion,” Asif recounted. “Ambulances couldn’t reach them because of the massive crowd. We had no choice but to carry them on our shoulders and rush them to the nearest hospital. While we managed to save 17, tragically, 9 lost their lives.”
For Asif, humanity came first. “We didn’t see nationality—only people in need. We helped both Indian and Pakistani pilgrims alike,” he said.
His extraordinary bravery earned him Pakistan’s Sitara-i-Imtiaz, awarded by President Asif Ali Zardari, while the Indian government also recognized his heroic efforts.
Grateful for the honors, Asif expressed his appreciation to the President, Prime Minister, and Ministry of Religious Affairs. “The joy of saving lives is beyond words,” he remarked.
