Jewellers across Pakistan have launched a nationwide strike in protest against recent actions by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), leading to the closure of jewellery markets in major cities and trading centers. The strike comes amid growing tensions between traders and tax authorities over what jewellers describe as excessive inspections, raids, and harassment.
According to representatives of the jewellery sector, businesses have suspended operations to demonstrate their opposition to FBR enforcement measures. Traders argue that the ongoing actions are disrupting commercial activities, creating uncertainty in the market, and placing unnecessary pressure on small and medium-sized businesses.
The FBR, on the other hand, has intensified efforts to bring the jewellery industry into the formal tax system as part of broader initiatives to improve tax compliance and documentation. Authorities maintain that increased oversight is necessary to ensure transparency, prevent tax evasion, and expand the country’s tax base.
The strike has resulted in the temporary closure of jewellery markets in several major cities, affecting both retailers and customers. Industry leaders have called on the government to engage in dialogue with stakeholders and address their concerns regarding tax enforcement procedures.
Jewellers’ associations have warned that if their demands are not heard, the protest could be extended, potentially affecting business activity and consumer transactions across the sector. They insist that while they support fair taxation, enforcement measures should be implemented in a manner that does not disrupt legitimate businesses.
The dispute highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing revenue collection efforts with the concerns of traders and business communities. As negotiations continue, market participants are hoping for a resolution that ensures tax compliance while allowing the jewellery sector to operate without undue disruption.
