Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a new modern curriculum as part of a major education reform plan for schools across the province.
One of the key changes is a 25% reduction in students’ textbook burden, with the new curriculum designed to make learning more manageable and focused. The reforms also introduce AI education from Class 1, giving students early exposure to modern technology and digital skills.
The Punjab government also plans to introduce legislation aimed at ending corporal punishment in schools. As an alternative, a proposal has been made to establish discipline counselors in classrooms to help manage student behavior through more constructive approaches.
Another notable change is that the authors of new textbooks will personally train teachers, helping educators better understand the material and teaching methods included in the revised curriculum.
The new textbooks are also expected to include QR codes. Students and teachers will be able to scan these codes to access video lessons related to the relevant topic, adding a digital learning component to traditional textbooks.
For the first time in Punjab, the reform plan also includes mental health training for teachers. The initiative aims to help educators better understand and respond to students’ emotional and psychological needs in the classroom.
Together, these measures represent a shift toward technology-based, student-focused and more modern approaches to education in Punjab.
