The Punjab Assembly has passed the Child Marriage Restraint (Amendment) Bill 2026 with a majority vote, introducing strict punishments to prevent underage marriages across the province. This new law is seen as a major step toward protecting children, especially young girls, from early marriages and their harmful effects on health, education, and future opportunities.
Under the new law, any person aged 18 or above who marries a minor will face legal action. The law also targets parents or guardians who support or arrange such marriages, making them equally responsible. This strong approach aims to reduce the practice of child marriage, which has remained a serious social issue in many parts of the region.
Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman Issues Direct Challenge to Government Over Child Marriage Laws
According to Sarah Ahmad, the bill reflects the vision of Maryam Nawaz to ensure the safety and rights of children. She explained that the law is designed to create awareness and discourage families from engaging in early marriages by imposing strict consequences.
As per the new rules, anyone found violating the law can face 2 to 3 years in prison along with a fine of up to 500,000 Pakistani rupees. These penalties are meant to act as a strong deterrent and encourage society to follow legal age requirements for marriage.
This development highlights the government’s commitment to child protection and social reform. By enforcing stricter laws and promoting awareness, Punjab aims to create a safer environment where children can focus on education and personal growth instead of being forced into early marriages.
