The Punjab government has expanded its free cancer treatment programme to 33 hospitals across the province, aiming to make specialized healthcare more accessible and reduce the financial pressure faced by cancer patients and their families.
The initiative, launched under the Chief Minister’s Special Initiative for Cancer Patients, provides eligible patients with treatment assistance of up to Rs. 1 million per year. The support covers major areas of cancer care, including diagnosis, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and essential medicines, depending on individual medical needs.
The programme now covers designated hospitals in several cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Sialkot, Mianwali, Lodhran, and Hafizabad.

For patients living in smaller cities and rural areas, the expansion could make a significant difference. Travelling repeatedly to major cities for chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, or diagnostic tests can create additional transportation and accommodation costs, especially for families already struggling with medical expenses.
Cancer treatment can require long-term care and repeated procedures, making the financial burden particularly challenging. By increasing the number of hospitals offering covered services, the provincial programme aims to bring treatment closer to eligible patients and provide greater financial support.
The initiative could also help families focus more on supporting their loved ones rather than worrying about some of the major costs associated with prolonged cancer treatment.
