The Government of Punjab has approved a major Rs3 billion anti-smog initiative to tackle rising air pollution and hazardous smog levels across the province. This comprehensive plan aims to improve air quality, protect public health, and introduce modern environmental monitoring systems in key urban and industrial areas.
Under the new project, 30 advanced fog cannon systems mounted on electric trucks will be deployed in pollution hotspots. These high-tech machines spray fine water mist into the air, helping to reduce dust particles and harmful pollutants. By targeting construction zones, busy roads, and industrial clusters, the government hopes to significantly lower airborne particulate matter that contributes to smog formation.
The initiative forms a central part of Punjab’s broader Clean Air and Climate Resilient Strategy, along with the Lahore Air Improvement Framework. A significant share of the budget — Rs2.25 billion — has been allocated specifically for Lahore, which has frequently ranked among cities with the highest pollution levels during winter months. Officials state that this funding will support integrated air management programs designed to provide long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes.

One of the key features of the initiative is the installation of a Super Station System for real-time pollution monitoring. These advanced stations will continuously track air quality indicators such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), carbon emissions, and other pollutants. This data will allow authorities to respond quickly to dangerous pollution spikes and make informed policy decisions.
The Punjab government is also introducing a unified “One City, One Policy” governance approach. This strategy aims to streamline environmental regulations and ensure that all departments follow consistent standards for air quality management. By eliminating fragmented policies, officials hope to improve coordination and enforcement across the province.
In addition, more than 50 air quality monitoring units have already been installed across Punjab to strengthen surveillance and data collection. Authorities are implementing digital tracking systems for industrial emissions to ensure factories comply with environmental laws. Environmental laboratories and forensic facilities are also being upgraded to enhance accuracy in testing and reporting.
Officials emphasize that transparency and strict monitoring are central to the success of this anti-smog initiative. By combining technology, governance reforms, and enforcement measures, the Punjab government aims to create cleaner air and a healthier environment for millions of residents. This Rs3 billion investment signals a strong commitment to long-term pollution control and sustainable urban development.
