The Punjab government has issued a province-wide directive requiring all wedding halls, marquees, and banquet venues to install suction hoods and proper exhaust systems by January 31 in an effort to combat rising air pollution and smog.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wedding and banquet venues are a significant source of harmful emissions due to large-scale cooking activities. These venues generate high levels of smoke, grease, and fine particulate matter, which contribute directly to deteriorating air quality and pose serious risks to public health.
The EPA has emphasized that exhaust and suction systems must be installed above all cooking units to effectively capture fumes and prevent them from being released into the surrounding environment. Venue owners have also been instructed to ensure the regular maintenance of these systems to maintain efficiency and compliance with environmental standards.

Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against non-compliant venues, including sealing of premises. The government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy, making it clear that no extensions or relaxations will be granted after the deadline.
Officials stated that the move is part of a broader strategy to reduce pollution sources that intensify urban smog, particularly during peak wedding seasons when large numbers of events take place daily.
Venue owners and managers have been urged to complete installations well before January 31 to avoid penalties and ensure uninterrupted operations. The Punjab government reiterated that public health and environmental protection remain top priorities, and collective cooperation is essential to achieve cleaner air across the province.
