Punjab’s Provincial Information Minister, Azma Bokhari, announced on Tuesday an ambitious five-year strategy to transition all transportation in the province to electric vehicles.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Bokhari revealed that the Chief Minister, during her recent visit to China, invited collaboration on transportation initiatives. As part of the plan, approximately 700 electric buses will be procured from China, with the first batch expected to arrive in Lahore soon, according to Pak Observer.
The minister also highlighted that the Chief Minister has authorized the Chinese company Jinko to establish a solar plant in Punjab. Over 60 companies have expressed interest in investing in the province, with some projects valued at $500 million.
Azma Bokhari praised Maryam Nawaz, stating that she is the first Chief Minister in Pakistan’s history to receive a Head of State-level protocol in China. “The warm reception she received in China caused PTI’s social media supporters sleepless nights,” she remarked, adding that the province could achieve significant progress if PTI’s disruptions were curtailed.
On security concerns, Bokhari reassured that the Chief Minister has prioritized the safety of Chinese investors, with several firms set to begin operations in Punjab shortly.
The Chief Minister has also envisioned transforming Lahore into a modern smart city, positioning it among the world’s most advanced urban centers. Furthermore, charging stations for electric bikes, particularly for students, are planned for Lahore in the near future.
Addressing Provincial Assembly member salaries, Bokhari clarified that the increases were implemented in 2019, with ministers paying a tax of Rs. 350,000. She emphasized that Maryam Nawaz does not draw a salary as Chief Minister.
