Sindh Police have issued a public advisory warning citizens against providing fingerprints, thumb impressions, or personal information to unauthorized vendors offering free SIM cards. Authorities say such activities can expose individuals to serious financial fraud, identity misuse, and potential legal complications.
According to the advisory, criminal groups often use illegally obtained SIM cards for fraudulent transactions, cybercrime, scams, and other unlawful activities. When SIM cards are registered using another person’s biometric information, innocent citizens may later face investigations or legal issues connected to crimes they did not commit. Police officials stressed that many people unknowingly become victims simply by sharing personal details without verifying the authenticity of the vendor.
Sindh Police urged the public to remain cautious and only obtain SIM cards through officially authorized franchises and registered service centers. Citizens were also advised never to hand over copies of identification documents or biometric information to unknown individuals on streets, markets, or temporary stalls promising free or discounted mobile connections.
The warning comes amid increasing concerns about digital fraud and misuse of personal data. Law enforcement agencies say criminals continue to exploit weak awareness among the public by offering fake promotions or free services to collect sensitive information. Once biometric data is misused, tracing and resolving related legal matters can become difficult and time-consuming for victims.
Authorities also encouraged citizens to regularly check the number of SIM cards registered against their identity and immediately report any suspicious activity to relevant telecom operators or law enforcement agencies. Public awareness, officials say, remains one of the strongest tools in preventing cybercrime and identity theft.
