World Bank Approves $375.9 Million Project to Modernize Pakistan’s National Power Grid

World Bank

The World Bank has approved a $375.9 million Grid Stability Project to strengthen Pakistan’s electricity transmission network and improve the reliability of the national power system. The project is part of the first phase of the World Bank’s long-term partnership program aimed at supporting Pakistan’s economic growth and infrastructure development.

According to the World Bank, the project will upgrade the country’s power transmission system with modern technology, helping ensure a more stable and efficient electricity supply. The improved grid is expected to reduce transmission losses, increase operational efficiency, and support the growing demand for electricity across Pakistan.

A key component of the project includes the installation of advanced systems at three major 500-kV grid stations. These upgrades will enhance the National Grid’s capacity and improve the transmission of electricity from renewable energy sources.

The initiative will allow 640 megawatts (MW) of wind energy to be integrated into the national grid and improve the transmission of 1,840 MW of wind power generated in southern Pakistan. It will also connect 491 MW of new private-sector renewable energy projects, encouraging further investment in clean and sustainable energy.

World Bank Flags Delay in Pakistan’s $600 Million Fiscal Reform Programme

The World Bank estimates that the project will help reduce approximately 832,500 tonnes of carbon emissions every year, supporting Pakistan’s environmental commitments and transition toward greener energy.

Experts believe the investment will play a vital role in reducing load shedding, improving electricity reliability, and lowering the overall cost of power transmission. A stronger transmission network will also help industries, businesses, and households receive a more consistent electricity supply.

The approval of this major energy project highlights continued international support for Pakistan’s power sector reforms. Once completed, the Grid Stability Project is expected to improve energy security, strengthen the national electricity infrastructure, and create long-term economic and environmental benefits for the country.
