Pakistan has achieved a major milestone in its maritime sector with the arrival of its first fully transshipment cargo vessel capable of handling multiple types of freight at Karachi.
The vessel, M.V. ERLIN, successfully berthed at the KGTML terminal of Karachi Port Trust, marking a significant shift in port operations.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the development as a “quantum leap” for Pakistan’s ports. He highlighted that, unlike in the past when Karachi Port mainly handled container transshipment, the port can now manage general cargo, break bulk shipments, and vehicles under a single transshipment system.
According to the minister, recent reforms in the maritime sector have enhanced operational efficiency and improved Pakistan’s competitiveness in regional trade. He added that ports in Pakistan are now equipped to handle a wide range of cargo types, including transit trade for neighboring regions.

This advancement is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s position as a regional maritime hub, connecting key international trade routes and creating new business opportunities in logistics and shipping.
