Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has issued new directives aimed at improving urban safety and infrastructure standards across the province, including the installation of safety nets beneath manhole covers to prevent accidents and enhance public protection.
The decision was announced during a high-level review meeting on ongoing development projects, where the Chief Minister assessed progress reports submitted by divisional commissioners from across Punjab. She emphasized the need for timely completion of all infrastructure projects and strict monitoring to ensure quality standards are maintained.
As part of the initiative, a pilot project has already been launched in Gujranwala, where approximately 30,000 manholes will be equipped with polyester safety nets. Officials believe this measure will significantly reduce the risk of accidents, particularly in densely populated urban areas and during heavy rainfall conditions when open or damaged manholes can pose serious hazards.

In addition to safety improvements, the Chief Minister also directed authorities to accelerate road construction projects and ensure uniform urban planning standards across cities. These include standardized signboards, consistent shopfront color schemes, and enhanced beautification efforts aimed at improving the overall visual identity of urban centers.
The meeting also approved multiple infrastructure development and public park projects across different districts. Special attention was given to heritage preservation initiatives, including the development of heritage streets in Taxila, which aim to promote tourism while preserving cultural identity.
Under the broader “Suthra Punjab Programme,” the government will continue strict monitoring of cleanliness, sanitation, and municipal services. The initiative is part of a wider effort to modernize urban governance and improve the quality of life for citizens across Punjab.
Officials stated that these measures reflect a comprehensive approach to urban safety, infrastructure development, and environmental improvement, positioning Punjab toward more organized and sustainable city management in the coming years.
