Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani has formally announced the appointment of Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. Following the announcement, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas has officially assumed the position, filling a vacancy that had remained open after the seat was previously held by Senator Shibli Faraz.
According to sources, the Senate Secretariat has issued an official notification regarding the appointment. The notification was signed by the Acting Secretary of the Senate and copies have been forwarded to Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as well as to all members of the Upper House. The decision was taken after a thorough review of the Senate’s rules and procedures to ensure compliance with parliamentary regulations.
Several senior political figures congratulated Allama Raja Nasir Abbas on his appointment. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Rana Sanaullah, and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry were among those who extended their best wishes. Other senators from various parties also conveyed their congratulations, expressing hope that he would play an effective and constructive role as the Leader of the Opposition.

Sources confirmed that the position of opposition leader in the Senate had remained vacant following the departure of Senator Shibli Faraz, making the appointment necessary for the smooth functioning of parliamentary proceedings. The issuance of the notification officially completed the process, allowing Allama Raja Nasir Abbas to take charge of the opposition’s leadership in the Upper House.
The appointment comes shortly after a similar development in the National Assembly, where Speaker Ayaz Sadiq had earlier appointed Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the Leader of the Opposition. Together, these appointments have completed the leadership structure of the opposition benches in both houses of Parliament.
