Pakistan and Bangladesh are considering the launch of a ferry service and the establishment of a direct shipping line to enhance trade and tourism between the two countries, according to an official statement reported by Arab News.
Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry met Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Iqbal Hussain Khan in Islamabad to discuss measures to strengthen maritime cooperation and economic ties.
“A ferry service will significantly increase tourism and trade activities,” Chaudhry said. He added that improving maritime connectivity in the region would enhance economic stability, while a direct shipping line would provide new momentum to bilateral trade.

Both countries expressed a commitment to expanding maritime cooperation and economic collaboration. Chaudhry emphasized Pakistan’s goal of transforming historical ties into a strong economic partnership.
Pakistan and Bangladesh were part of the same country until Bangladesh’s secession in 1971, which had long strained relations. However, ties have improved since August 2024, following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was widely seen as close to India. Since then, Dhaka has deepened engagement with Islamabad, including the resumption of direct flights in January after more than a decade.
