The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new chipless CNIC designed to make identity verification faster, easier and more secure.
The new polycarbonate identity card features a secure QR code that can be scanned using smartphones and the PakID app, allowing identity information to be verified digitally.
The redesigned CNIC includes essential identity details, photographs, bilingual information and upgraded security features aimed at improving protection against fraud and unauthorized use.

The new cards are being issued from August 14, 2026 as part of NADRA’s efforts to modernize Pakistan’s identity verification system.
Importantly, citizens who already hold existing CNICs do not need to replace them immediately. Current CNICs will remain valid until their stated expiry dates.
The introduction of the QR-enabled card is expected to make identity verification more convenient while supporting Pakistan’s wider shift toward secure digital services.
