The federal government has announced a major boost for public transport in the twin cities under the Budget 2026–27, significantly increasing funding for Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus services.
According to details, the subsidy for the transport system has been raised to Rs. 7.3 billion, compared to Rs. 3 billion in the previous year. The move is aimed at improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting environmentally friendly transportation options.
Officials have also revealed plans to expand the Green Electric Bus network by introducing 20 additional routes across Islamabad and Rawalpindi, covering more sectors and residential areas to improve commuter access. At present, around 23 routes are operational in the Rawalpindi Division, serving thousands of daily passengers.

The expansion is expected to enhance connectivity between key urban centers, making public transport more accessible and affordable for students, office workers, and low-income commuters. Authorities believe the increased use of electric buses will also help reduce air pollution and fuel consumption in densely populated areas.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize public transport infrastructure and shift towards cleaner energy solutions. By increasing fleet size and route coverage, officials aim to encourage more citizens to rely on mass transit systems instead of private vehicles.
Transport experts have welcomed the decision, stating that improved and affordable public transport could play a key role in addressing urban congestion and environmental challenges in major cities.
